When You’re Feeling Lost in the Trades
Every week, I meet young Canadians who tell me a quiet truth: “I thought choosing the trades would give me clarity. Instead, I feel more confused than ever.”
If that’s you — or someone you care about — I want you to hear this clearly:
You’re not lost because you made the wrong choice. You’re lost because the system around you is unclear, inconsistent, and often contradictory. None of that is your fault.
The Myth of the “Straight Path”
We tell young people that the trades offer a clear, linear route:
- Take a program
- Get an apprenticeship
- Earn your hours
- Write your exam
- Build your career
But the reality is far more complicated:
- Some programs lead directly to apprenticeships; some don’t.
- Some employers hire apprentices; others only hire fully trained workers.
- Some regions have abundant opportunities; others have almost none.
- Some students get mentors; others are left to figure it out on their own.
The system isn’t “broken” — it was never designed with clarity in mind.
So if you’re feeling lost, it’s not a personal failing. It’s a predictable outcome of a structure that leaves too many young people guessing.
The Emotional Weight No One Talks About
Feeling lost in the trades isn’t just logistical — it’s emotional.
Students tell me:
- “I don’t want to disappoint my family.”
- “Everyone else seems to know what they’re doing.”
- “I’m scared I chose the wrong path.”
- “I don’t know who to ask for help.”
These aren’t small feelings. They shape confidence, identity, and the willingness to keep going. And we rarely create spaces where young people can speak these truths without judgment.
This is why I created wvARC — to build those spaces.
What You’re Experiencing Has a Name
It’s not failure. It’s not a lack of effort. It’s not “kids these days.”
It’s systemic ambiguity.
A gap between what young people are told the trades will be and what they actually encounter when they step into them.
Naming this matters. Once you can name it, you can begin to navigate it.
You Are Not Alone — And You Are Not Behind
Every pathway in the trades is unique. Some students find their footing quickly. Others take longer. Both are normal.
You are not behind. You are in the part of the journey no one prepared you for. That’s where guidance, mentorship, and clarity matter most.
What This Week’s Video Offers
The YouTube message you’ll see this week is simple, but intentional:
- acknowledges the confusion
- validates the emotional reality
- names the systemic gaps
- offers a calm, grounded voice in a noisy landscape
The video is short by design.
The website is where the deeper conversation lives.
If You’re Feeling Lost Right Now
Here’s what I want you to hold onto:
- You’re not alone
- You’re not failing
- You’re not the only one confused
- You’re not expected to know everything at 17, 18, or 19
- You’re allowed to ask questions
- You’re allowed to change direction
- You’re allowed to take your time
The trades are not a race. They are a craft — and craft takes time.
Where We Go From Here
Over the coming weeks, I’ll continue releasing:
- short YouTube messages
- expanded website reflections
- practical guidance for students and families
- clarity around pathways, expectations, and realities
My goal is simple:
To make the trades a place where young people feel seen, supported, and guided — not lost.
If this message speaks to you, share it with someone who needs it.
And if you’re the one feeling lost, stay with me.
We’ll walk this path together, one clear step at a time.
